I have to remind myself everyday that there is so much in the world that I can’t control, and that I will never be able to control.. and that I should not waste my time worrying about these things. A prime example of this would be other people’s judgements. People judge and form opinions about things – that’s life. I have zero control over what any one person may think of me, and that is completely and totally okay. Another example of something we can’t control is the future. Nothing will go exactly how you picture it in your head, so you need to let that expectation go or else you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Life will always be uncertain – but once you learn to embrace that, then you will save yourself a lot of stress and worry.
I had the hardest time making the decision to switch from communications to psychology as a major mainly because I was trying to picture the way my life would turn out if I had careers in each one of those majors, and which life looked better in my head. What a terrible way to make decisions!! Life is uncertain and I have no ability to predict the outcome of my life based on which major I choose. Once I recognized that, I was able to think more clearly about which major felt right and I ended up going with my gut instinct – psychology. Once I was able to make that decision, I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I let go the need to control my future.
We can only control who we are. If we are not happy with something in our lives, we have the opportunity to stop and change directions. Go down a different path. Take that risk you’ve been contemplating. That is when all the incredible things start to happen in your life. Think about the things in your life that frustrate you because you attempt to or spend time wishing you could control them? Imagine how you would feel if you let go of that need to control them? Practice having faith that your life will turn out the way it is supposed to, and that everything happens for a reason. Let go a little and just let life happen.. remind yourself this everyday, and eventually I guarantee you will start to believe it.
